About Us

Founded in 1987

Up and Out was founded in 1987 with the introduction of six adults to our first apartment support program. Now, decades later, we serve up to 45 clients in our Residential and Supported Living programs.

Up and Out originated after the closing of the Fairview Training Center and acknowledges the trauma experienced through institutionalization and remains committed to providing person-centered living options through the life-span.

Clients are Family

Up and Out provides stable and long-term residential options by purchasing all of the homes for 24-hour residential supports.

At Up and Out, relationships are valued and employees are encouraged to share and connect deeply by sharing experiences and exploring similar interests.

Volunteer-Governed

Up and Out, Inc. is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board employs the Executive Director, approves budgets and policy, and provides general oversight as the governing body.

The board is comprised of community professionals and individuals with family members who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities. The board of directors is committed to sustain Up and Out to provide advocacy for inclusion and life-long supports.

Personal Enrichment

Up and Out encourages personalized life enrichment and growth toward one’s own personal potential.

Thoughtful, individualized support is provided in areas that address needs such as developing and maintaining healthy relationships, personal health, community access, personal independence, maintaining a healthy diet, rights and self-advocacy, sex education, alternative relaxation techniques, emergency preparedness education and more.

Up and Out presumes competence and designs supports after each person’s specific needs and learning styles are assessed.

MyPlate

Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at a higher risk of poor health outcomes. Research shows that those living in community settings, such as group homes, are at an even higher risk. We recognize our responsibility in providing healthy, balanced, and nutritious meals in our settings.

Up and Out has implemented USDA’s MyPlate as a model for meal planning and nutrition, and provides healthy evidenced-based menus rich with nutrients and balanced meals based on current Dietary Guidelines.

Community

Up and Out builds community within each home. Current residents participate in the introduction and welcoming of potential and new housemates. Within the homes, residents share meals, celebrate birthdays and preferred holidays, host picnics, dinner parties, movie parties, sporting events, barbecues, and more.

Full participation in group-living lifestyles is encouraged, however not required! Sharing space at all times is not for everyone. Some of our homes are quiet, more solitary, and we recognize those needs and interests and offer options for these preferences as well.

Take the Pledge for Inclusion.

Everyone deserves to be fully included.
